Understanding Bioengineered and GMO Foods: Informed Dining for Healthier Choices

As a part of DCAL BRAND, we are committed to helping you make informed dining choices, shedding light on the quality of food that you consume daily, especially when eating out. This journey begins with understanding what's on your plate. Two terms that often come up in health food discussions are 'GMO' and 'bioengineered'. But what do they mean and why should you care?

GMO stands for 'genetically modified organisms'. These are living organisms whose genetic material has been artificially manipulated in a laboratory through genetic engineering. The technique often merges DNA from different species, creating combinations of plant, animal, bacterial, and viral genes that do not occur in nature or through traditional crossbreeding methods.

Bioengineering, on the other hand, is a subcategory of genetic engineering. A bioengineered food has had its DNA altered specifically through the addition of at least one genetic material from another organism. This means all bioengineered foods are GMOs, but not all GMOs are bioengineered. The difference lies in the source and method of genetic alteration. Many might wonder about the potential dangers of consuming GMO or bioengineered foods. Though these techniques have been used to increase crop yields or resist pests, critics argue that manipulating an organism's DNA could have unforeseen health risks. Some studies suggest a link between GMO foods and health issues like organ damage, gastrointestinal disorders, and immune system disorders. However, more comprehensive research is needed to fully understand the long-term effects.

When eating out, the chances are high that you are consuming GMO or bioengineered food without even realizing it. For instance, McDonald's, like many other fast-food chains, has not publicly committed to eliminating GMOs from their menus.

The challenge of finding non-GMO or non-bioengineered foods can feel daunting, but there are some strategies. Look for food labeled as 'Non-GMO Project Verified' or 'USDA Organic', as these certifications prohibit the use of GMOs. You can also focus on whole foods like fruits, vegetables, and unprocessed grains, which are less likely to be genetically modified.

Unfortunately, there's no definitive list of foods without bioengineered ingredients, as the practice is widespread in the agricultural industry. Some common crops to watch out for are corn, canola, and soy, as these are frequently genetically modified. However, opting for organic versions of these foods can provide peace of mind.
